Suggestions for Aged Care centres Mark McIlroy 04.05.2026 In an Aged Care home all domestic work is done for the resident, including cooking meals, washing clothes, and even assisance with showering. However life could become boring so here are some suggestions to improve life for the residents. 1. Assign one room for a bathtub, where each resident could have a hot bath once per month. 2. A gymnasium for very light exercise, for example five minutes once per week gently on an exercise bike. This would be highly beneficial to health, longevity and enjoyment of life. 3. At least once every two months each resident should be put on the centre's bus and driven at least 15km from the center. It is probably not practical to take residents on a tour of a shopping center but at least this would enable them to view the outside world and maintain their physical references. Family members could be doing this but many residents don't have these days out. 4. Rotate the menu. Many centers advertise 'home-cooked meals' but this food can become very repetitive. How about a pizza night, pasta, indian food, thai night etc. 5. Staff should address residents by titles, such as Mr Smith, Professor Jones etc. rather than first names. The resident's last or highest title before retirement should be used. This would be an important way for residents to retain dignity and personal space.
